Review: Sleeping Beauty, Dec 2012, Singapore

What a brilliant performance at the opening day of Sleeping Beauty, ballet presented by the Singapore Dance Theatre last night. Beautifully glittering costumes, magnificent sets and extraordinary dance performances by many talented artists. Wordlessly stunning movements by the King, Queen, Princess Aurora, Prince Florimund, Bluebird, Lilac fairy and not to mention Carabosse, though wicked fairy but looked really precious in her character. It did not only ended with standing ovations, a huge round of applause but also there was one man who stood up and shouted "BRAVO". Well, that's how it was. Congratulations to the organizers for this fantabulous musical and moving performance. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

In celebration of the magical Christmas season, a time of love, hope and festivities, Singapore Dance Theatre will enchant audiences with  Sleeping Beauty, a ballet often considered as the pinnacle of classical repertoire. Staged by artistic director Janek Schergen featuring choreography by Marius Petipa, Singapore Dance Theatre will bring this beloved fairy-tale to life at the Esplanade Theatre as a grand finale to the 2012 season, with stunning costumes, spectacular sets and principal dancers of incomparable technique. This is the second time SDT is performing Sleeping Beauty, following the company premiere of the piece in 2010. 

A treat for all ages, audiences will be captivated by this timeless tale about a beautiful princess, a spell  of 100 years sleep, a charming prince and a true love’s kiss which awakens the  kingdom’s slumber. Sleeping Beauty is set to a rich score by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, with stunning costumes designed by Tracy Grant Lord.

Be spellbound by one of the most famous ballets in the classical repertoire!

In line with Children’s Day this October, Singapore Dance Theatre and Esplanade is organizing Dance Appreciation Series: An Introduction to Sleeping Beauty. This performance will captivate young audiences with an hour of magic, fantasy, fairies, princes, princesses and exquisite dancing, celebrating the beauty of dance and the element of hope that we all embrace. This performance includes the Prologue with the Lilac Fairy, and Act III (Aurora’s Wedding) of the ballet.

Sleeping Beauty
13 – 16 December

Sleeping Beauty is considered to be the pinnacle of classical ballet repertoire. Choreographed by Marius Petipa and set to a soaring score composed by Pyotr IIyich Tchaikovsky, Sleeping Beauty tells the timeless story of young Princess Aurora who falls prey to the evil fairy Carabosse. Only a kiss from a handsome prince will break the spell and ensure her future happiness.  Sleeping Beauty features some of the most famous and demanding choreography and, in its opulence, dynamism, formal rigour and sensitivity to the sheer pleasures of choreographed stagecraft, epitomizes perhaps better than any other production, the meaning of classical ballet.
