Safari Zoo Run 2015 will be an even wilder affair compared to previous years, with activities spread across two days for the first time in the run’s seven-year history.

Next year’s run will see competitive runners racing on 7 February while 8 February will be the fun run where the runners will also get the opportunity to participate in a ‘Best Dressed Runner’ contest and get a chance to enjoy a whole host of carnival festivities.

The races, both competitive and fun, will transport runners past animal exhibits through meandering paths lined by greenery in Night Safari and Singapore Zoo.

Safari Zoo Run was conceived to commemorate Singapore Zoo’s famous matriarch and one of Singapore’s most adored personalities — Ah Meng the Sumatran orang utan. The iconic personality died of old age in February 2008.

To commemorate 50 years of tourism development and promotions in Singapore and to thank Singaporeans for their support, Jurong Bird Park hatches the inaugural Eggy Day Out for Singapore residents to discover little known aspects of the park.

The Eggy Day Out carnival weekend features a plethora of eggs-periential activities, including:

• Lory Loft Behind-the-Scenes Tour which highlights the colourful lories and how their unique feed is prepared.

• Memories Trail, led by Jurong Bird Park’s General Manager who will bring participants down memory lane and share how the park has evolved through his 38-year experience as a veteran.

• Junior Eggs-pert Tour that showcases how eggs are incubated and a bird’s life stages at the Breeding & Research Centre (BRC).

• Celebrity Eggs-cursion, in which personalities like MediaCorp Artistes Bryan Wong, MediaCorp Class 95FM DJ Glenn Ong, MediaCorp Gold 90.5FM DJ The Flying Dutchman and MediaCorp Love 97.2FM DJ Leelian Chua will lead tours at Waterfall Aviary / South East Asian Birds Aviary.

To top it all, children between the ages of 3-12 years will enjoy 50% discount on admission tickets during Eggy Day Out by flashing a coupon that can be downloaded from www.birdpark.com.sg/eggydayout between 10-20 April. 

In addition to this, holders of Feather Friends, Friends of Night Safari, Friends of River Safari and Friends of the Zoo membership cards are entitled to five complimentary child admission tickets when they purchase up to five adult tickets from 18 - 20 April 2014.

River Safari, the park is also introducing two behind-the-scenes tours:

• Fishy Business, a brand new tour which showcases the complex life support systems in the Amazon Flooded Forest.

• Be a Panda Researcher, where visitors learn to identify panda tracks and examine panda poo and paw prints, and discover ways we can save them from extinction.

Singapore Zoo for Animals in the Pink is also offering a peek into the park’s Central Kitchen and world-class animal hospital or Spineless & Successful, where visitors will discover how breeding and maintenance work is conducted for butterflies, scorpions, stick insects and other invertebrates.

Wading through the River Safari in Singapore

Wading through the Rivers of the world: Mississippi, Congo, Nile, Ganges, Murray, Mekong and Yangtze rivers; and forests in Wild Amazonia: Squirrel Monkey Forest, Amazon Flooded Forest and more, Super Mommies & Daddies bring you the best of their recent visit to Asia's first ever river themed wildlife park called the River Safari in Singapore. 

Located next to the famous Singapore Zoo, our journey started, on a slightly wet but a nice windy morning, through the Mississippi River with Paddlefish, Alligator Gar, Alligator Snapping Turtle and some interesting facts related to the American Beavers. 

As we moved on, we hit the Congo River and River Nile inhabiting the Tigerfish, African Dwarf Crocodile, Congo Tetra, Giant Puffer Fish and more.

After that was a rare and astonishing sight of the two giant crocodilians called the Indian Gharials at the Ganges River.

While we were still admiring the gharials and the sight of the Upper Seletar Reservoir from a viewing deck, we reached the Murray River housing Barramundi, an Australian Lungfish and Murray Cod followed by the freshwater aquariums at the Mekong River with Mekong Giant Catfish and Giant Freshwater Stingray,Yangtze River keeping Yangtze Alligator & Giant Salamander Giant, and  Giant Siamese Carp before we entered into the Giant Panda Forest, the house of famous Kai Kai and Jia Jia.

At the doorstep of Giant Panda Forest, we saw an interesting video showcasing the arrival of Kai Kai and Jia Jia in Singapore and their new home at the Singapore Zoo.

 

As we walked through the forest, we saw a cute little Red Panda and a Golden Pheasant but surprisingly found both Kai Kai and Jia Jia fast asleep. According to the zoo keepers, the best time to visit them is in the afternoon when they are usually awake. Unlike Jia Jia who is known to be shy and seen through a CCTV installed outside her den, Kai Kai is usually found outside lying on the bamboos and seen through the viewing gallery.

After saying good bye to the two pandas, we stopped by the Panda Sculpture to take family photos and where we also came across the cute Panda buns and Panda chairs at Mama Panda Kitchen restaurant located next to it.

On our way to the Wild Amazonia, we walked through a scenic viewing deck and stopped by for a River Talk show around 11am at the Amazon River Square. This show was not only about interesting facts related to various animals such as vultures, pelicans, royal python, star tortoise and a hedgehog but also a touch and feel opportunity for kids to get closer with them. We could also take photos with some of the animals after the show.

 

 

 

 

 

 

While the Amazon River Quest boat ride was still not available and is expected to be opened later this year, our journey didn't end here. As we walked further along the Upper Seletar Reservoir, we passed by Jaguarundi showcase and a fun Squirrel Monkey Forest before stepping into the giant fresh water aquarium, called the Amazon Flooded Forest housing Manatees, Sea Cows, Piranhas, Mermaids, Catfish and more.

 

 

  

Not only this, we also passed by the River Safari Tea House and posed with the costumed polar bear mascot outside the River Safari, next to a newly opened Frozen Tundra exhibit.

Long story short, River Safari is one of the MUST SEE places in Singapore!

The River is Calling!
