Safari Zoo Run 2015 will be an even wilder affair compared to previous years, with activities spread across two days for the first time in the run’s seven-year history.

Next year’s run will see competitive runners racing on 7 February while 8 February will be the fun run where the runners will also get the opportunity to participate in a ‘Best Dressed Runner’ contest and get a chance to enjoy a whole host of carnival festivities.

The races, both competitive and fun, will transport runners past animal exhibits through meandering paths lined by greenery in Night Safari and Singapore Zoo.

Safari Zoo Run was conceived to commemorate Singapore Zoo’s famous matriarch and one of Singapore’s most adored personalities — Ah Meng the Sumatran orang utan. The iconic personality died of old age in February 2008.

Bare Your Sole, Walkathon in July 2014!

Habitat for Humanity Singapore’s annual walkathon Bare Your Sole is back this year, providing participants with a unique way to raise funds in the fight against homelessness and poverty. The 2.5km and 5km barefoot charity walk will take place on Saturday, 12 July 2014, from 9am-12pm, at Gardens by the Bay. Currently in its sixth year, the annual event encourages participants to walk barefoot to support those living in poverty and unable to afford basic amenities, such as shelter or clothing.

Habitat for Humanity Singapore is commemorating the positive change which the local community has made over the past five years. Last year’s event had approximately 5,000 participants walking barefoot for the cause, and had raised more than S$300,000. Bare Your Sole 2014 aims to register more than 6,000 participants this year and to raise S$500,000.

Funds raised will benefit Habitat for Humanity Singapore’s local programme Project HomeWorks, an initiative designed to improve the living conditions of the elderly, the sick and the physically challenged living in one-room flats across the nation.

Besides walking barefoot for a good cause, Bare Your Sole 2014 promises to be a fun-filled family event, with food stations by popular eating destinations, such as Dean & Deluca and Cold Stone Creamery. A variety of activities for children, including roving performances by stilt walkers, percussionists and balloon sculptors, will entertain the young and the young at heart. Participants can also stand to win attractive prizes at a raffle draw open to all.

As a complement to the charity walk, participants can help raise funds by competing in the 100KM Challenge as a solo effort or as a collective relay with their friends, families, interest groups and colleagues. Attractive prizes can be won in the following categories: the most creative team, the fastest team, and the team with the highest funds raised.

Singapore’s largest popular tulip display – Tulipmania – is back at the Flower Dome with some 50,000 tulip bulbs of many varieties and colours directly from the Netherlands. To join in this floral celebration, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will fly in Miffy – a well-loved children’s book character - bringing the tulips and a piece of Holland with her to Singapore.

Drawing inspiration from the Madurodam, a miniature replica model park in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Tulipmania aims to enthral guests and present a truly unique experience for visitors by bringing the cool climate blooms right into the heart of our tropical climate.

Celebrations at Gardens by the Bay

From August to November, Gardens by the Bay celebrates National Day and the festivals of Hari Raya, Mid-Autumn Festival and Deepavali with a series of changing floral displays in the Flower Dome themed “Celebrations!”.

Hari Raya & National Day
“Celebrations!” kicks off with a red-and-white Hari Raya themed floral display which also ties in with National Day. The floral display not only showcases a variety of flora such as orchids, roses and begonias, but also features the five stars of the national flag. Complementing the display are traditional Malay celebratory ornaments such as the Bunga Telur and Bunga Manggar. Of the flowers featured in the display, the orchids are commonly associated with Singapore while roses have traditionally been used by the Malay community in combination with Pandan leaves and other fragrant flowers to make Bunga Rampai, an aromatic confetti given out during times of celebration.
 
For local residents, there will also be a $4.80 discount on local admission tickets to the cooled conservatories from 7 to 11 August.

In August, Garden Series, in collaborating with several local schools will be held in series of free performances in the Gardens over two weekends. 

Mid-Autumn Festival
In September, the flower field will undergo another change in celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival, also commonly known as Lantern Festival. Flowers and lanterns will take centre stage, with “lantern flowers” like Fuchsias and Abutilons sitting alongside autumn-blooms such as Chrysanthemums and Goldenrods. 

Deepavali
From mid-October to early November, the Gardens will celebrate Deepavali with a floral display inspired by the colourful kolam, a traditional Indian decorative art. Vibrant colours of purple and orange from flowers like Amaranths, Cone Flowers and Cockscombs will be complemented by Indian fabric lanterns, lamps and carved wooden elephants, bringing “Celebrations!” to a befitting close with a floral tapestry of colour!

Polar Bear Inuka at Singapore Zoo

POLAR BEAR INUKA ARRIVES AT 
FROZEN TUNDRA EXHIBIT, SINGAPORE ZOO

The first polar bear born in the tropics, Singapore Zoo’s very own Inuka, moved into his new Frozen Tundra last month. The 2,700 sq metre exhibit features climate controlled resting areas, an expanded pool for Inuka to swim in, and two new sections for Inuka’s new neighbours: raccoon dogs and wolverines.

Modelled closely after the arctic habitat, some of the innovative features of Frozen Tundra that help replicate the chilly climate of the arctic include a new, larger pool filled with giant ice blocks so Inuka can enjoy refreshing swims, and an ice cave where he can retire to, to enjoy a polar siesta. Natural substrates have also been incorporated to provide him with a rich and varied home.

The Frozen Tundra also showcases Inuka’s new neighbours, the raccoon dogs and wolverines. Raccoon dogs, also known as tanuki, are native to East Asia. Frozen Tundra’s raccoon dogs are named Pom and Poko and come from Japan’s Asahiyama Zoo.

Wolverines are the largest land-dwelling species of the weasel family. Native across the Northern Hemisphere, wolverines have adapted to a wide range of habitats. Frozen Tundra’s wolverines are a brother and sister pair named Boris and Ivana from Russia’s Novosibirsk Zoo.

Polar bears hunt mostly on ice floes in winter months, and retreating sea ice due to global warming has resulted in the diminishing of their hunting grounds and food sources. If global temperatures continue to rise, polar bears may become extinct across most of their range within a hundred years.

Ballet Under The Stars by Singapore Dance Theatre, July 2013

Immerse yourself in the perfect evening at Singapore Dance Theatre’s (SDT) 18th Edition of the annual Ballet Under the Stars. From 19 – 21 July, SDT will perform a dazzling showcase of contemporary dance works, featuring guest artists from Expressions Dance Company (Australia) as well as stunning pieces from the Company’s repertoire. From 26 – 28 July, SDT will revive the heart-wrenching romantic tale of Giselle, one of ballet’s most famous tragedies.

Absence of Story by Toru Shimazaki

Toru’s initial concept for this piece was to create a visual array of movements to accompany the music of Brahms. This particular piece of music is so powerful that he simply wanted to react honestly to it. Absence of Story is danced to the music of Brahms, and is a stirring piece without story or words in hope of not causing distraction to the beauty and the power of music. Toru Shimazaki is the chief professor of the dance department at Kobe College and has created works for many international companies including Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, The Royal Flanders Ballet, Polish Dance Theatre, Colorado Ballet, Grand Theatre de Geneve and Introdans.

Giselle

26 – 28 July, Fort Canning Green, 7.30pm

This breathtaking ballet tells of the love story between a village maiden, Giselle, and a nobleman, Albrecht. Mesmerized by her beauty and innocence, Albrecht disguises himself as a peasant and promises eternal love to Giselle despite being betrothed to a Duke's daughter, Bathilde. Soon after, she discovers his deceit, and driven by grief, she kills herself with Albrecht's sword.

With love unrequited, she dies of a broken heart, much to the dismay of Albrecht who has only come to realize his true love for Giselle when he mourns for her at the tomb. In Giselle's melancholic world of vengeance and despair, she transforms from an innocent lady to a wilis, who are spirits of betrothed maidens betrayed by their beloved loves on the night before their wedding. 

Free Admission for children below the age of 4 years old.
