Bare Your Sole, Walkathon in July 2014!

Habitat for Humanity Singapore’s annual walkathon Bare Your Sole is back this year, providing participants with a unique way to raise funds in the fight against homelessness and poverty. The 2.5km and 5km barefoot charity walk will take place on Saturday, 12 July 2014, from 9am-12pm, at Gardens by the Bay. Currently in its sixth year, the annual event encourages participants to walk barefoot to support those living in poverty and unable to afford basic amenities, such as shelter or clothing.

Habitat for Humanity Singapore is commemorating the positive change which the local community has made over the past five years. Last year’s event had approximately 5,000 participants walking barefoot for the cause, and had raised more than S$300,000. Bare Your Sole 2014 aims to register more than 6,000 participants this year and to raise S$500,000.

Funds raised will benefit Habitat for Humanity Singapore’s local programme Project HomeWorks, an initiative designed to improve the living conditions of the elderly, the sick and the physically challenged living in one-room flats across the nation.

Besides walking barefoot for a good cause, Bare Your Sole 2014 promises to be a fun-filled family event, with food stations by popular eating destinations, such as Dean & Deluca and Cold Stone Creamery. A variety of activities for children, including roving performances by stilt walkers, percussionists and balloon sculptors, will entertain the young and the young at heart. Participants can also stand to win attractive prizes at a raffle draw open to all.

As a complement to the charity walk, participants can help raise funds by competing in the 100KM Challenge as a solo effort or as a collective relay with their friends, families, interest groups and colleagues. Attractive prizes can be won in the following categories: the most creative team, the fastest team, and the team with the highest funds raised.

Why is the moon round? 

Why are there so many colours and shapes in the world? 

Come, journey with Smallest Dragon as she goes in search of answers in a magical, whimsical and colourful world.

Round the Moon, Blue the Sky is a fast-paced, lively and physical production about Smallest Dragon. She is always asking questions, poking her nose into things and curious about the world.  

What are her favourite words? WHY and HOW and WHAT! 

One night she sees the moon, and wonders why it is the shape that it is. Fascinated, she sets off to find other round things – and quickly realises that there are many other important shapes too. As she explores, she also discovers the wonder of colours! 

Combining a unique blend of physical theatre, riveting puppetry, black light magic and lots of audience interaction, this highly engaging and educational performance is specially tailored for children from 2 to 8 years old; although older children and grownups will find much to amuse, enthral and engage too!

Back by popular demand, Singapore Dance Theatre (SDT) will be restaging Peter & Blue’s Forest Adventure from 5 - 8 June at the Esplanade Theatre Studio. Created by SDT Artistic Director Janek Schergen, this hour- long children’s ballet production brings together meaningful morals in a time of fun and adventure.

On a sunny midsummer morning, Peter, his dog Blue and cat Calico, venture into the enchanted forest in search of treats to surprise his mother on her birthday. 

In the woods, Peter and Blue meet the forest guardians, the Blueberry Boys, who lead them into the most secluded and magical part of the forest. On their journey, they meet many new friends - Mr and Mrs Strawberry, the Apple Blossom Girls, the trouble-making Thistle, Thorn, and Acorn, and the charming flowers Lilac, Rose, and Snapdragon. Each generously gives Peter special treasures to add to his mother’s birthday basket.

Peter and Blue are escorted home by their new friends, where Peter presents his mother with the basket of goodies. As the day ends, Mother tucks Peter into bed, and the forest folk watch as he falls asleep after his day of adventure.

Meet-the-characters and photo-taking session will also take place after the show.

• Memories Trail, led by Jurong Bird Park’s General Manager who will bring participants down memory lane and share how the park has evolved through his 38-year experience as a veteran.

Both competitions encourage young Singaporeans to be superheroes for the planet and use their power to drive positive change for a sustainable future.

Are you a creative spark who loves making movies, cares about the environment, and are currently studying at a Tertiary Institution in Singapore?

If your answer is “yes”, this is your golden opportunity to show us how you “Use Your Power”!

Be a superhero for the planet, and make your voice heard by making a film encouraging the people in your community to join the Earth Hour movement to change their lifestyle habits and to create a sustainable future.

Singapore today has the 12^th largest environmental footprint in the world, and the films submitted by students (either individual or group entries) should bring to life why committing to one of these four simple actions is a big step towards building a sustainable future:

• Turn up your Air-Con by 1 degree celsius
• Switch to LED light bulbs
• Use fewer plastic bags
• Take shorter showers

Film entries should be no longer than 3 minutes, and must be submitted before 11:59pm on Tuesday 18^th March 2014.

All entries will be judged by Marc Webb, director of the upcoming film The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The winning short film will be screened at the Singapore premiere.

WWF-Singapore’s Earth Hour Online Photo Competition invites you to be a superhero and ‘Use Your Power’ to drive positive change for the environment via photo entries on Instagram.

The contest participants stand to win a chance to meet Earth Hour’s international ambassador in Singapore! The competition is open to all students between the ages of 7 and 17 from both local and international schools in Singapore.

The winning photo should be original, well-liked by the global social media community and more importantly answer the following question, “If you were a superhero for the day, what would you do to save the Earth?” Images should show one of the four simple actions that can contribute to building a sustainable future:

Kids Fiesta 2014: FUNtastiCarnival is a unique one-stop carnival for kids to eat, play, shop and have fun with the ARTS. It is a meaningful event that seeks to inspire and nurture young Singaporeans through art activities and ART is FUN! contest. Children will be exposed to different art mediums, from visual arts to performing arts, and even martial arts.

Art plays an important part in a child’s development. It provides freedom of expression and an outlet for little ones to express themselves creatively.

Like arts, sports require skill and dedication of time, whether it is played competitively or pursued as a leisure activity. Join the sports-related activities too on the event.

The event aims to strengthen community bonds, promote volunteerism and the spirit of giving as children donate their artwork, and in turn, the proceeds to charity, encouraging them to build a caring and gracious society.    

Highlights

Art is FUN: Calling in art pieces from kids 12 and below to submit what their idea of fun is via drawing, painting, colouring…anything!

Splash paint on paper, play around with recycled materials, doodle with crayons - show us how creative you can get on a piece of drawing paper! Most importantly, just have FUN! 

Selected art pieces will be displayed and sold at $50. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Children’s Charities Association. The charity will to be selling their works. Some of these children are going through art therapy.

Selected art works will be placed along with several MediaCorp artistes.
